In early January safe of 1872, Morton met with all the state board of agriculture to suggest a holiday dedicated to the advantages and planting of trees.
Morton proposed the vacation be called "Arbor Day". The board of agriculture agreed, along with the first unofficial Arbor Day occured on April 10th 1872. Some estimates report possibly one million trees that were planted for this first celebration. Participation was encouraged by providing rewards and prizes to municipalities as well as people who planted the largest numbers of trees.
